WHAT We have learned

Through comprehensive research and various studies, Prairie Skies has gained valuable insights into the integration process and the challenges and opportunities faced by newcomers.

These learnings underscore the importance of a comprehensive, collaborative, and adaptive approach to supporting newcomers, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities needed to thrive in their new communities.

  • Importance of Early Support: Early intervention and support are critical in the settlement process. Providing newcomers with immediate access to information, language training, and essential services significantly enhances their ability to integrate smoothly into the community.
  • Economic Integration: Employment is a cornerstone of successful integration. Our studies show that facilitating job readiness programs, credential recognition, and connections with local employers helps newcomers achieve economic stability and contribute to the local economy.

  • Social Connections: Building social networks is vital for newcomers’ well-being and integration. Programs that foster connections between newcomers and long-time residents, such as mentorship schemes and community events, promote a sense of belonging and mutual understanding.

  • Holistic Services: A one-size-fits-all approach does not work. Tailored, holistic services that address multiple aspects of a newcomer’s life—from housing and healthcare to education and social inclusion—are essential for effective integration.

  • Role of Community Organizations: Local community organizations are pivotal in supporting newcomers. Our research highlights the importance of strengthening these organizations through funding, capacity-building initiatives, and fostering collaborations among them.

  • Continuous Learning and Adaptation: The needs of newcomers are dynamic. Continuous learning and adaptation of programs based on feedback and ongoing research ensure that services remain relevant and effective.

  • Mental Health and Well-Being: Addressing the mental health needs of newcomers is essential. Providing culturally sensitive mental health services and reducing stigma around seeking help are critical components of our approach.

  • Data-Driven Approaches: Utilizing data to inform our strategies has been instrumental. Regularly collecting, analyzing, and applying data helps us understand trends, identify gaps, and measure the impact of our programs.

  • Policy Impact: Policy decisions at local, provincial, and federal levels significantly impact newcomers’ experiences. Advocacy for inclusive policies, based on research findings, is crucial to removing systemic barriers and promoting equity.
